EMSLIE HORNIMAN PARK, NORTH KENSINGTON, LONDON

Invitation to this limited City Challenge competition followed from Cezary Bednarski's long standing involvement with the North Kensington community, among others as a council member for the North Kensington Business Forum. The project involved total strategic re-design of this inner city park, set in one of the most deprived areas of the capital, suffering from social problems including crime, drag abuse and vandalism. The new master plan / regeneration project for the park, which includes a Grade II listed garden and structures, provided sports facilities with a new all weather sports pitch, a changing pavilion and sports lighting system, an extensive junior playground and an external auditorium. Full services included successful applications for Lottery Funding. We secured a £1 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £200K from the Arts Lottery and £170K from the Sports Lottery in addition to the original RBKC budget of £400K. Completed August 1997 the park has successfully survived fourteen Notting Hill Carnivals...
