LÄNSISATAMANKADUN SILTA, "MÄKIHYPPÄÄJÄ" BRIDGE, PORT OF HELSINKI ( span 140 m )
We were the first prize winners in a six-team limited competition, involving also Marc Mimram and four Finnish teams, to design a new road/tram/cycle/pedestrian bridge in a new urban development area created on the Helsinki waterfront. The competition was judged, among others, by Professor Jörg Schlaich. Responding to site constraints and searching for a landmark structure for Helsinki, we proposed a cable-stayed bridge with a forward inclined mast and splayed rear stays. The bridge, with a form inspired by the world famous Finnish ski jumpers, had a steel deck and a segmental steel mast 82 meters high. Stay anchorages were fully recessed within the three mast segments and the mast was lit internally from within the voids. Incredibly, the City of Helsinki never confirmed our design team’s contract but commissioned and built a new design by one of the losing Finnish teams ( refer issue 65 Bridge Design and Engineering magazine ).
