LEKKI BELTWAY BRIDGE, LAGOS, NIGERIA ( length 10.5km )

Lagos traffic congestions are world famous. Fela Kuti immortalised them in his Go Slow hit. The Lagos Lagoon is shallow and it has no significant navigation that would call for high bridge clearances or long spans. The bridge, inspired by the structure of the Farnsworth House, is a means of relieving the city’s transit traffic and a symbolic structure – a green avenue snaking along the Lagoon with a row of palm tress along its whole length. It carries eight lanes of road traffic, two cycle lanes, service lanes and monorail. Elevated monorail tracks are located above the bridge deck so as to permit long views of the Lagoon from the trains and from the cars. The project includes also the creation of three new areas of reclaimed land in the proximity of the bridge and two separate ‘spot’ islands. Considering the high land values in Lagos reclaiming land on the Lagoon would provide a funding solution for the bridge.
