PROTOTYPE SYSTEM OF PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS ALONG JUBILEE 2000 ROUTES IN ROME

Through an open international competition Comune di Roma sought designs for a system of lightweight temporary pedestrian street bridges. They were to cater for the high numbers of pilgrims and tourists visiting the historic sights of Rome in the year 2000. Our design was one of three winners all of whom were offered design contracts. In contrast to the other winners our design offered the possibility of re-using the most expensive parts of the structure after the Millennium year. Simple steel and timber decks were suspended beneath monocoque aluminium or carbon fibre shell beams, rested on sets of four columns, braced for stability. While the decks would have been scrapped the shell beams with the columns could be re-used as canopies, for example for bus stops in front of Stazione Termini in Rome. Advertising super-graphics were envisaged for the undersides of the canopies. Project developed with Ove Arup and Partners.
