TOAST HOUSE, CHOUMERT ROAD, PECKHAM, LONDON

This three-storey three-bedroom house, an experiment aimed at creating habitable conditions out of awkward urban sites, puts to use a 2.8m wide leftover urban site. Taking advantage of the fact that the site is located in an area singled out for urban improvements with the participation of artists ( Anthony Gormley and Tom Philips ) we proposed a Toast House, shaped like a ‘three-storey slice of toast’ slotted into a narrow space between the adjacent buildings. If clad in, say, black zinc it would probably earn itself the nickname Burnt Toast House... Open plan living space located under a curved roof will have the feel of a narrow houseboat. Planning appeal against Southwark Council was won in September 2006 with the inspector stating : "I am satisfied that the proposed development would sit comfortably in its location(…) I do not think it would have any material impact on the residents of the adjacent properties".
